Finasteride is a synthetic steroid called dutasteride that inhibits the conversion of testosterone to 5-alpha reductase. When the enzyme is broken down, it converts it to another substance, namely 5-alpha reductase. Finasteride works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. DHT is a hormone that is primarily responsible for the hair loss in men. The hormone is not a synthetic steroid or a hormone used in the treatment of male pattern hair loss.
The researchers used a mouse model to evaluate the effects of finasteride on male pattern hair loss and examined the association between finasteride use and hair loss.
The team found that the finasteride group experienced a significant increase in hair loss compared with the control group, but the group taking finasteride was not affected by the increase in hair loss. The researchers also found that finasteride treatment had no effect on the rate of hair loss in men who took it.
